I am trying to model the response of group pile that have been affected by the earthquake. When I run the abaqus I recieved some warnings:
36 elements are distorted. Either the isoparametric angles are out of the suggested limits or the triangular or tetrahedral quality measure is bad. The elements have been identified in element set WarnElemDistorted.

if Abaqus creats already an .odb file you can display the distorted elements.
Create Display Group ->select the elemt set WarnElemDistorted -> use the check box: Highlight items in viewport. Now the elements are marked in red in your model and you can identify the locations of the distorted elements. Refine the mesh around this locations or change element types.

Apart from the mesh refinement, you should apply the load in many subsets. As the dynamic load suddenly applied in few subsets (time intervals) distorts the elements highly. You can do this either by reducing the time increment or by increasing the number of subsets to solve the problem.

i have faced similar problem before. best solution is to change element type and meshing technique you use. The problem can sometimes be solved by changing time increament but this needs many trials. also analysis type can be changed from implicit to explicit to help with the problem.

i am also facing a similar problem. i am able to select the element in the odb viewport, but in order to change the element type or meshing type i need to identify them in the model viewport which i am not able to do, since those elements are inside the model could you help me?

I have faced the same problem. I changed the element shape to Hex. Make sure your are trying different shapes.
