I am looking to get a microscope for the identification of larvae in aquatic invasive species work. Would like to use it for the identification of larvae for aquatic invasive species work. Primarily crab larvae but may use for ballast and freshwater samples later.
Depends on size. If I were You I woluld like to try KEYENCE light or laser microscope. Light microscope can take a pictures from different heignt and make one photo. Laser microscope will give 3D data matrix.
For larger organisms from pencil lead diameter to perhaps the size of a finger print, a dissecting (stereo) scope may be all you need. I have a Nikon smz1000 that I quite like....if you are purchasing new off the shelf it will work. If you are on a smaller budget, a Wild M5 from the 1970s with a photo tube can be wonderful...beautiful optics. I tend to get more use out of my M5 than the SMZ. I found good digital cameras from China on ebay and I have one on my M5 and on the SMZ.....if you like to tinker with antique scopes then that route is good. Good luck.
