Hi all! When I wanna copy a molecule in the GaussView 5.0.8, the following error is appeared
"Failed to read fragment file". (Please see the attached file)
I re-installed the GaussView, even the Gaussian, but the problem did not solved. Also, I tried to change the scratch directory from the file icon but it didn't work!
Could you help me? Thank you!
Hi, I have that error before sometimes. In g09w, there is a folder named scratch. In scratch, there are several folder named "fragments-3-4-2016-...."...Ur numbers might be different but it starts with fragments.... I think you should delete those folder and try again

Its opened to me with out any error, but i am also faced similar problem with linear chains like acetylenes long back. If u want to see that, please open your .gjf file in the note or text pad, just change the any one coordinate by hand and save it. Next you reopen with your software, i think it will show your structure. However, if you want to see your optimized geometries and other stuff, lot of free software is available in the internet, For example Avagadro.

Hi, as I understand it is not a problem to open the file (5-chaindd.gif) but you can't copy/paste the picture of the molecule (Clipboard.frg) from the GaussView window. Does the error appear when you try to copy from the window or you want to paste it to the graphics window? On my version it works fine with your input file.

When I want to copy and paste it at the same page for creating longer chain, I see that error. Thank you for ur reply. what is ur version of GV?
My version is 5.0.9.
When I copy the molecule it also appears in the main window as a new builder fragment labeled *clipboard". It behaves like a selected element, ring, etc. fragment that can be added to a molecule group window.
Does that error only occur with that specific molecule or with others as well? If that is true may be you should, as suggested above, change the folder for temporary files in the preferences.

It seems that this error occurs for linear molecules with CinfV point group. But When I broke the symmetry the error was appeared again. How can I change the folder for temporary files in the preferences? previously I have changed the scratch directory and starting directory from preferences. But it did not work.
I have no problems with linear molecules with CinfV symmetry. If you get the same error with all fragments it points to a problem with the directory. You can select a new directory by clicking on the "Clipboard" button that pops up when you select "custom fragment" or do a "copy" of your molecule. I assume that you have RW rights on your scratch directory. May be you explain your problem in an email to [email protected].
I had the same problem with GaussView 6 under linux (OpenSuSE 42.3) and simply could not find a solution. Then, after upgrading to Leap 15 GaussView works just fine. Now the problem appeared again with my student. As GaussView was fine on my account and not on his, I checked the environmental variables and figured out that he is using Hungarian as LANG settings. So I changed his setting also as "export LANG=en_US.UTF-8", and GaussView works just fine.
