We printed the first functional 3D printed motor cycle which is really a functional direct printed and assembled sculpture. There are many articles on the web about it and it made it into the Guiness Book of World Records. The issues that come up are often designing for proper support removal, strength, and the desired surface finishing. We used this as a display of many finishing techniques. My advice is start small and try one technique at a time. Do not be a purest in 3D printing unless you have a purpose like we did. It is a tool like any other tool in your collection.
