I want to perform 13 isotope studies to confirm the source of carbon in CO2 photoreduction in to methane. I am wondering where the m/z peak position in mass spectra (MS) for 13CH4 should come. Should it be at 17 or 16?
It should appear around m/z 17. Each H contributes 1, and C-13 contributes 13. The C-12 peak for methane would appear at m/z 16. However, if the CH4 is being converted into CO2, the C-13 peak for CO2 would appear at m/z 45.
