What is the difference between the design of a ordinary waveguide and recipropcal waveguide?

I want to know how to design a nonreciprocal waveguide. I'm not sure if the only difference between these two waveguides is only the material used to design them.

I want to do an ion exchange of cu+ and glass but I cannot get it to take place. I have done it like in the explanation.

I added NH4Cl to CuCl and mixed them, put it in the crucible with the glass, and put them in the furnace at 500 degrees Celsius but nothing happened.
