Even though anti-spoofing is just one aspect of the overall security of biometric system, it would be very interesting to learn which methods are stable in theory & practice.

What are good explanations why the anti-spoofing protection / liveness detection of the fingerprint sensor in the recent smartphone didn't work?

It was introduced to have a method for also verifying subepidermal features, but the recent hack based on a simple silicone finger sleeve was not filtered out.
