Is FeCl2 required as a mild reducing agent when enriching for iron reducers with ferrihydrite and lactate/acetate?

Attempting to isolate iron reducers from various sediments, unsure as to whether FeCl2 should be added to ensure anaerobic enough conditions - not clear whether this is commonly practiced from papers.
