Should i use caustic for balancing the alkalinity and ph of UASBR or should i go with sodium carbonate?

the VFA/alkalinity ratio of my UASBR is desturbed and i really need to balance it out(as far as i know, it should be less than one) besides i would like to know the exact procedure for VFA...
