Could anybody advise me how to prepare submicron (colloidal) silica particles from sodium silicate solution ?

I have tried multistep dilution/neutralization process getting silica-gel like material that was aged for about one week in open baker. It resulted in coarse particles with size of 10-100 microns....

We need to etch pure silver for a metallographic purpose. Can somebody suggest us etchant that does not contain cyanide ?

This is exceptional request to do metallography of pure silver. We are not equiped for toxic etchants.
