Is PBS a suitable vehicle for testing the hemolytic activity of drugs in Ex vivo red blood cell hemolysis assay?

I am working with small molecules with antiplasmodial activity. I want to evaluate the hemolytic activity using a regular assay assessing hemolysis by measuring the absorbance at 414 nm.
