Freezing human atrial tissue biopsies on O.C.T. compound.

Can anyone suggest a protocol or some useful tips for this procedure in order to preserve the tissue architecture without artifacts? If possible I prefer to avoid any fixative.

Does anyone extract RNA from only formalin fixed tissue (and not also paraffin embedded)?

I know that there are many commercial available kits from FFPE, but I would like to extract RNA from a cardiac tissue sample preserved only in formalin.
