Staining of malaria parasites (chromatin dot and cytoplasm); is it similar or different from that of blood cells when romanowsky stains are used?

Because chromatin dots of malaria parasites contain nucleic acids, my expectation is that they attract the positively charged dye of the stain(MB) and get blue stained. But they normally appear red!
