In Nickel affinity chromatography I am purifying a membrane protein tagged with GFP, why is it crucial for full TEV digestion?

I know so far that it can affect GFP to not be completely uncoupled from the membrane protein and could ruin molecular weight on SDS-PAGE as well as protein function
