Terminology of fluorescence peaks of spinel?

All the research luminescence of spinel named the peaks of spinel luminescence peaks as R1, R2, N1, n3..... Why are they named as these? What the capital "N" for and what the "n" for? Thanks!

Why the sharp peaks in luminescence spectra of some minerals are named as R/N-line?

Such as ruby has R1/R2 peaks/lines in its luminescence spectra, spinel has R1, R2, N1,n3 peaks/lines, what the terminology of them? Are there some reference can be used?
