Is there a genetic promoter system which is transactivated by something biologically and environmentally inert?

For example, the Tet-On system ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetracycline-controlled_transcriptional_activation ) uses tetracycline or doxycycline, which isn't inert. Any better alternatives?
