Why in"Energy Dissipation in Eighteen-Foot Drop Broken-Back Culvert under Open Channel Flow Conditions"authors mention the 18ft?is it channel length?

I thought the channel width is important , so why the channel length was mentioned in these paper?it seems channel length play on important role.am I right?
