The heated lid on an ABI 2700 PCR machine has broken and stuck in the shut position. Is there an easy/efficient/any way to open it?

The PCR machine lid is stuck, and there is probably a broken component inside. These 2700 machines have been on the market for years, so presumably this has happened to people in the past.
