In 1983, Howard Gardner proposed the Theory of Multiple Intelligences (MI), though he has continued to revise his theory over the years. He felt the traditional concept of intelligence was incomplete and instead proposed a variety of different types of intelligence, such as:
In my opinion, we should try to change our traditional methods and try to consider
multiple intelligence not only in schools but also in other communities. Every body in this world is capable of being sth but it depends on our training methods.
I think many years later, there would be systems in which the educators try to find the relative importance of all types of multiple intelligence among the people in the society which enable leaders to guide them to their real situation in which they should grow up.
Students' multiple intelligences are hard to be measured and assessed. MI identified by Gardner who is specialized in psychology; so, teachers may confront some challenges regarding applying MI in their classrooms. Moreover, if teachers apply MI, they must change the way they assess students' learning.
Some researchers also questioned the usability of using MI to promote students' learning due to that teachers may build their curriculum according to lower learning standard beside they may apply surficial activities more frequent which lead to impede enhancing rich learning across students. So, still, there is a gap between the MI theory and practice.
Indeed, although MI theory has some strengths, I think it would be better to consider universal design for learning (UDL) as a promising approach to apply in the classroom because the implementation will be guided by three principles that link to the curriculum, and teacher can apply these principles by following specific guidelines with assessing the quality of instructions by using formative assessment.
