I am constructing a DC Transformer for connecting a solar panel, who's quasi-parallel connected cells charge a 12V lead acid battery.
The turns ratio is switch adjustable, so as to maximize power transfer under changed solar radiation, and changed battery state of charge.
The DC transformer is explained in the lecture notes attached.

Changing duty cycle, instead of turns ratio, sharply degrades performance, and creates a large filtering problem at the output. The DC transformer creates a continuous coupling, and, in low voltage cases, uses the output capacitor of the high voltage source, to filter the load current changes. This continuous reflection, or referral is a property only of transformers, AC or DC.
