Yes it is.

A good percentage of employees working in various industries are all product of different universities, hence teaching ethics or inculcating ethical values no doubt should be made paramount at the tertiary level so as to enable such individuals to practice/ develop such when they get to the industry. A fundamental question also becomes" what if the industry does not have the required resources to organize or teach ethics" ?

I am returning from a STEM education conference at present. The keynote speaker this morning is designing a liberal engineering degree course which will include ethics education.

I think it would be of great interest, which also makes me wonder if there is a discourse being created or already created related to the ethics of STEM, perhaps akin to philosophy of science, etc. The discourse of STEM as it relates to the teacher preparation field would benefit from this, especially if looked at through an equity lens in that there is an ethics involved to offering such opportunities, but also, what are the ethics or ethical boundaries/borders/commitments of those in such fields.

Absolutely! It covers all disciplines. I teach ethics to third year nurses and take them on a historical journey from Nazi Germany to the Nuremberg Trials, to Human Rights and on to research that has gone horribly wrong, or to where there has been a lack of research ethics through proper consent and trialling eg. Thalidomide/ Tuskegee study. It makes more sense as to why we have Codes of Professional Conduct and in particular, for nurses, why we have our nursing Code of Ethics. All professions have a Code of Conduct but I find staff think they are just nice sentiments until the reality of why they are there becomes clearly apparent! Go for it! the purpose of everything is societal wellbeing, ethics is a preamble to that.

I have been integrating ethics in every course, every class, and with every topic.

Ethics is associated with SHEQ-P  (safety, health, environment, quality  & productivity). Implies with ethics you cater to societal safety health.....

This was deliberated viz. when a person chose to use NaCl (AR)  in need for common salt during lunch hours, or .. (many other examples)

Engineering societies are always keen  that students should have ethics, but in my view much that has been done is not fit for purpose.  The essential features for STEM graduates should be:

(a) The importance of getting things right, and communicating the truth so that ethical decisions can be made (not necessarily by yourself).   Errors in calculations which would earn you 6/10 at college can end up killing people.

(b) Understand that the world is very complex.  Good results for some people can mean bad results for others.

(c) Understand that the bottom line for ethics varies with culture.  (Most of those writing or speaking assume that their culture is the right one.)  The USA "individual freedom" contrasts with the "obligation to society" of many others and the UK "sense of fair play".

(d) The practical need to deal with others of a different religious standpoint, including ones you may be totally opposed to, and appreciate their concerns.

(e) Be clear that "whistle-blowers" are very likely to lose their jobs and have difficulty with further careers, no matter how right they are.

(f) Some formal grounding in logic and in particular fallacious reasoning.

Yes it should be taught, because lack of knowledge is one source of being unethical 

Hi All, thanks for the support - The idea of a chapter on ethics seems to be being reasonably well received although Abdul has set us a new challenge,the challenge has now become: "The vast majority of the theories and approaches/notions that the contributors have suggested come from within the field of education and technology. Bearing this limitation in mind, a new criterion for accepting contributions has been established, which is that contributions may not be known in the field of education and technology and may not have a history of application to education and technology. That is, many in the field of education and technology must not have heard of this contribution." Do you have any thoughts on a distinctly different approach we might think about or that you know about?

Hi Tony, I already teach ethics in science at master level. It is a vast field and according to the specificity of the program, you can find a proper approach, starting from history and codes to misconduct of research and many other subjects.

The problem is that ethics is a subject - it is not a notion nor a theory. Do you think you can find a theory and/or notion within the subject of ethics?
