Geographers are very shy people prefering the concept of space from non-geographers. For me is the space a multiplicity in the sense of Deleuze/Guattari and respecting D. Harvey´s absolute, relative, and relational space. Up-to-date UNO world concept of sustainability plus the Earth with oceans and continents in addition of rural and urban spatialities means real background for space in geographical interpretation.
I would encourage you to look at Part I of the Handbook which contains chapters looking at regions as a spatial concept, territory and territoriality, regions and place, relational space/regions. There is also a chapter on 'Marine regionalism' as well as regionalism in each of the continents in Part V.
