Hi, I did not know really much about xmgrace, so there's an unsolved problem I got:
I wanted to open and plot the data within a dat file in xmgrace. I clicked Menu Data --> Import --> ASCII --> chose my folder --> click my dat file. Instead a graph, the one who kept appear was a dialog box 'Grace: console'. The graph never appeared even after I double clicked my dat files. My each dat files contained sasa or secondary structure calculation; and were produced by vmd. The columns of the data in both dat files was a mess. Was the mess the reason I could not plot the data in both dat files? Or is there any alternatives to plot dat files and to analyze sasa+secondary structure of an md simulation trajectory?
A simple dat file contains two columns: the data for abscissa and ordinate. I do not see your dat file, so I can just guess that it is the data mess you mentioned that causes the problem (does the dat file contain some letter characters or strange symbols?). In xmgrace one can inspect the columns and check the correctness of data.
