ResearchGate (RG) takes citations only from papers, which are uploaded in RG. Hence, citations in Google Scholar are unknown for RG. One way to include these citations in RG is to upload the paper with the citation as "supplementary resources" of your paper, then RG will be able to extract the citation. Be careful because RG adds your name as author in the paper that you are adding. So delete your name, save it and hope that the automatic citation extracting machine of RG find the citation.

The total citation depends on the database used, for example, RG counts all citations from the papers those on RG. So if you have cited by other paper not added to RG it will not counted. Google scholar shows the highest number of citations as all published papers could be found by google. When you moved to Scopus you will find lower number of citation as it counts only the papers indexed by Scopus only. Same if you go to Thomson Returnees u will get lower citation as it counts from papers indexed by WoS only.

You can only get the same number of citations in RG and google scholar in case all of the papers have cited you were registered and added to RG.

Why some citations are not recorded which are found in google scholar?

I was suffering from the same problem, the reason is simple that(who cited you in an article is now not registered on RG, so his citation does not exist here). If his article arises on RG or when he registers it will be recorded directly. Regards

Thanks Dr Adrian Gambier for your suggestion but I have tried it, it never worked. I added some of these papers as supplementary over 5 months ago but none has been captured by RG.

No one has the right to upload the others' papers.

Supplementary data means data belongs to the same papers but it published in other file as it less important than the main data or the data in the main file exceed the journal limits. So according to this the person who uploads others' papers under his papers as sub data will derictly put himself under big problem.

Simply this means the sub data is his own data and indeed it is not.

In addition, I don't think RG will count citation from sub data as RG will consider it is another part of the same paper.

Hi, I added some papers as references in a project, and it worked at that time. Now... This does not longer work because we are no longer able to upload copyrighted material (also not our own papers). ResearchGate has been accused by Elsevier and other publishers in the German court as a provider of infrastructure for illegal contents. Hence, the future of RG is at present unknown. They has been deleting a large amount of documents in the last time.

Adding missing citations in Research gate

WORKING SOLUTION: (warning! With some complications)

Why: Recently noted that one of my paper had 10 citations in RG however 17 in google scholar citation index. RG use to have manual way to add citations, however this is not available now. This is way around to solve that problem. As researchers citations are one the very important indicator of acceptance of our work in research community.

How:

This is solution to add paper which cited your work but not showing in RG by adding them in that paper's supplementary resources. I have added so far 7 citations and 5 already showing in the RG system of citations count.

Solution: 

1) Double click the name of paper to which you want to add citations missing in GR (which are showing up in google scholar or another platform).

2) One trick to find if additional papers which have cited you in addition to RG, search in google scholar with name of your paper. (if you already have list skip this step). You can find the list by search with title of the paper in google scholar, it will show one result with no. of citations of that paper. Click on the citations button and you will find list of all papers which cited your work.

3) From google scholar on page which shows list of paper which have cited you, click on each paper name, and download it.

4) Drag the drop papers in dragbox 

5) You can add name and full title of the papers you have downloaded and make sure they have cited your work.

6) Done - while you add supplementary material system will be scanning them to add in citation index of RG.

7) By default the paper you have added as supplementary material will be also listed in your publications so you have to "Remove from your profile" from Remove option on that paper. However, it will not reduce your citations of the papers. These are added since by default you are one of the authors of the supplementary material so by this step it will be solved. 

8) For copyright issues, you have to remove these supplementary materials (papers which cited you) if permission is required and I am not sure if this will effect citation no. of a paper (still have to check it).

However there is small problem, that while adding authors names, your name will be added by default. This is bug which RG have to work it but problem looks solved. However you can remove other co-authors names from authors while adding original article authors of paper which cited you.

This has happened to me. I had 13 citations in one paper and all have disappeared in RG but can be seen in GS! However, I can see one paper with 4 citations in GR but 6 in GS. I have no idea about the rest of my papers as I have just noted this strange change; I am still making follow-ups. I wish RG could have an automated system on the citations.

Probably, RG counts/ extracts citations from documents uploaded only on RG network, RG does not extract citations from documents uploaded elsewhere like Web of Science/Scopus and so on.

And really it happens that Google Scholar shows more citations than that of Research gate.net.

What I still don't understand is that, the RG had formally counted them but once I changed a bit of information (that I was in the Department of Tourism and Recreation and now I have been transferred to the Department of Language Studies), that is when I lost many citations. The Google Scholar shows 31 citations while the RG displays only 11 of them. Can RG personnel help us on this conundrum?

Andrey E. Krauklis I've read your method. I am a bit confused about this new list of reference. For example, if I have 7 citations on a paper and RG is not able to read any of them (but GScholar is), should I create a list containing 7 references and upload as a separate file? For me these documents are not available on RG, e.g. conference publications, theses etc. so it is not possible to download citation.

Also, what do you mean by:

About your question, Ayesha Batool , a "new list of references" means a seaparate file with the same references as in the original file, but differently written in order to increase the chance of them being recognized by the RG algorithm. If your paper has 7 references, then make a separate file with the same 7 references, optimize reference style and upload as a Private copy to an already existing article that you have - this should help recognize the missing references. To make sure that you understand the method by Andrey E. Krauklis fully. Do realize it is only useful for citations/references of your own paper/poster etc. Especially older documents render pdf files that are not text searchable and therefor the search engine of RG cannot find them. The method can also be used for perfectly text-searchable pdf files where some of the references are written in a form that is not recognized by the search engine of RG, using this method of creating your own list it is often possible to rewrite those references in such a way that they are recognized.

Unfortunately, the method cannot be used to correct for citations from other papers. Missing citations is highly frustrating, but this method is not the solution. Although if more RG members use this method, it could improve the citation counts for everyone somewhat.

Dear Rob Keller , thank you for a very valueable comment! Indeed, that needed to be mentioned. If only there was a way to improve the recognition of references in others' works as well.

At the moment, like Rob Keller mentioned, if more people try to get as many references recognized in their own works as possible, then this should indirectly improve recognitions for everyone involved. This method is only at its best when it is a joint effort.

So in a way, if you improve reference recognition in your own works, you help others get their references recognized.

google citations are more updated due to its large database. Anyhow, some of my papers on ACS platform show more citations than google scholars. So there is no single platform to see the exact number of citations. Google is the closest one.

I think revers to the Google schooler, RG does not take into consideration the self-citations, in case you have.

Your statement is not true. RG do count self-citations. As a matter of fact, it is even counted in your h-index, just go to “scores” in your ‘overview’ page and you a see two h-index number including on which says, “excluding self-citations”.

There are different techniques to count for the citation in each platform. Google Scholar is more reliable.

I observed that RG relies not only on the uploaded papers in their system to improve citations but also on uploading researcher's articles that are not using the RG platform.

It's all about unique algorithm of different social networking sites e.g. Google Scholar, RG, Academy etc . So, no worries. It happens with everyone

I think you should upload your research articles to RG

Researchers usually use multiple databases to increase their citations. Every database includes those citations that are in their databases.

So far, there is no way to add missing citations manually. Google Scholar does not index some journals. If one of your articles were cited by a journal article that Google Scholar does not index, the citation would not appear in your google scholar account.

It is impossible to link the two databases of RG ans GS. For me, the best thing to do is to upload the full-text of your articles and conference papers on researchgate in order to have more visibility on the Net. Google Scholar will update their database automatically.

We regularly import citation data from different sources and do our best to ensure accuracy. However, while citations using standard citation styles are usually extracted accurately on ResearchGate, there are some cases where this can be difficult.

Here’s what you can do to help your citations appear on ResearchGate:

Make sure the citing paper is on ResearchGate

Check to see if the paper has complete and accurate metadata (e.g., publication date, journal, abstract)

Make sure any full-text PDFs were not created by scanning a hard copy, as we can’t extract citations from scanned copies

RG is quick to communicate citations. GS has slowed down of late. Manual updation has not been functioning.

Pl advise how to correct co-author name on RG which probably has been picked up automatically due to similarity in name.
