Resently, increasing researchers began to realize that Pt should not be used as counter electrode in the HER process without an ion-exchange membrane, beacuse they found that " both electrochemical and chemical dissolution of Pt in acidic or alkaline electrolyte cause redeposition of Pt on the working electrode of interest, which significantly improves the HER activity. (J. Mater. Chem. A, 2015, 3, 13080; Energy Environ. Sci., 2017, DOI: 10.1039/C7EE00388A; ACS Energy Lett. 2017, 2, 1070). So, we can find that the reported HER activity with Pt as the counter electrode always shows an amazing HER performance. we need someone stand up and say “Pt should not be selected as the counter electrode for measuring the activity of HER unless it is coupled with an ion-exchange membrane, which was commonly ignored during past research.”
