Researchers in the field of education are avoiding the use of theory in their research. Their research contains merge literature reviews focusing on the factors they are interested in and try to find the correlation of these factors in their context.
Basically the problem arises because the theory rarely aligns with the political reality - as they say in the classics never bite the hand that feeds you.
I think that, with the need to produce papers, it is easier literature reviews that using theory in their research.
When you say, afraid of using theory - do you mean they don't mention the theory? All composition, including research, falls into categories of theories. From my experience, students new to education don't like theories because they don't know any theories or theoretical concepts. However, it's also interesting to note they themselves learned by the same theories they claim they don't know. For example, Piaget's theory of contructivism shows how we (people in the 21st century) construct knowledge, and how we teach students. Perhaps theory is scary at the college level at first because the way we learn is taken for granted as we grow and mature from infants to college students, and so learning is thought of as innate.
