Dryland ecosystems are one of the more important and vulnerable ecosystems in the world, comprising fully 40 percent of the Earth’s land surface. Moreover, the lives of billions of people depend on its conservation. However, understanding why people value (or not) these types of ecosystems requires understanding much further that they are drylands that do not provide few ecosystem services (compared to other ecosystems, this would make for another interesting question!!). I also understand that it can be a very simple question or on the contrary a very complex one. It is also globally accepted that many factors can explain this disconnection of human-dryland, such as the simply lack of water or charismatic species, or the impossibility of developing agricultural practices. However, after having studied these ecosystems (SE Spain) for more than 15 years, I believe that the roots of the lack of value that people place on drylands are much deeper than a mere categorization of types of value (new fashion of instrumental versus intrinsic versus relational values), and surely we need to understand cultural and evolutionary aspects together.
Happy to discuss further!
