Can we not say that on a more basic level, GR is a theory of space curvature?

Because Einstein's equivalence principle is wrong, Einstein’s gravitation theory is wrong.

What is the difference between time dilation in Special theory of relativity and Gravitational time dilatation?

Time dilation in Special theory of relativity is caused by positive energy.

Suppose an experiment is carried out in a uniformly accelerated (with acceleration a) reference frame and the result is noted (suppose the result is that Higgs mass is 125 GeV). After that, the same experiment is done in a non-accelerated reference frame which is inside a gravitational field g=-a, and the result is again noted. Then according to the equivalence principle, in the non-accelerated frame you should get the same result. That is you will again get that Higgs mass is equal to 125 GeV. So in my opinion, according to the equivalence principle, it will not be incorrect if you call it Einstein's general theory of acceleration.

I would agree that it is a theory of space curvature.  But how is it curved? In what 'direction'? And (going off other RG discussions) can it really be 'time' that space is connected to?

The equations are for a curvature of 3-D space.  It is my understanding that bringing 'time' as a 4-D is an interpretation of the equations, rather than a direct result of the equations (consider that 'time' is not like a physical dimension).

What if we postulate a 4-D that is a physical dimension we currently do not account for and this is what our 3-D space is 'curved into'?  Won't the equations still hold - isn't this just a different interpretation?

This is a clearer and more exact explanation of what we get if we start with the Milne approach.

In empty space the path of a ray of light defines a straight line and its velocity determines the distances according to Milne. If concentrations of matter-energy are introduced, the velocity is reduced differently at different points according to their locations relative to the concentrations of matter-energy. The distances will be changed accordingly. Acording to Huygens' principle, the straight lines of the rays must have become curved. This is the intuitive essence of the matter.

To mathematize this idea, distance measurements are taken from different points, locations of the points are determined and their locations embedded in a 4 dimensional space time. It is found that the metric of this space is must be changed after the introduction of matter-energy to get consistent locations and measurements. These changes are called 'curvature' or 'spatial curvature' and are very convenient in describing the complex changes which have taken place in the distances.

For example, given a beam of light passing close to the Sun, we find that the part of the wave front closest to the Sun will have a slightly reduced velocity and according to Huygens' principle, the beam will bend away from the straight line it would follow if the Sun were not there. Most people will just say that the photon has been 'accelerated' by the space 'curvature' which has been calculated there, as described above. The mathematics is different, but the physics is the same.
