Most phase transitions in solids, like polymorphic solid-solid phase transitions, are slow and sluggish, showing a clear hysteresis effect. But when a crystal melts it seems to be a perfect first-order transition. Why is there no superheating in crystals and/or supercooling of the liquid melt? I am thinking primarily of organic molecular crystals here.
