complex had fwhm of 40 nm in acetonitrile increase to 60nm immobalising covelently on glass substrate

There is more than one factor corresponding to peak broadening:

Size
Strain broadening
Instrumental broadening

You may have more strain in your new system if the complex is attached to a surface.
