Germplasm conservation, pre breeding or breeding in a purpose of new crop establishment is important for profit. New variety will make the profit if it may gain benefit for grower and for consumer. This mechanism of gaining benefits on both sides, side of grower and another side that is consumer, was repeating with appearing of new crop, during history of agriculture.

Pre-breeding is the science of identifying desired traits in wild relatives and starting to incorporate them into modern varieties. Wild relatives may have no commercial use; however, they may have important characteristics such as disease/ pest resistance and yield which may be absent in the commercial varieties. Important characteristics are accumulated while undesirable ones are minimized or removed. Hence prebreeding (population enhancement) is a vital step in the link between conservation (genebanks) and use of plant genetic resources. It is the first step in the use of diversity arising from wild relatives and other unimproved materials and results in a genetic base broadening in commercial varieties.

Pre-breeding aims to isolate desired genetic traits (e.g. disease resistance) from unadapted material like CWR and introduce them into breeding lines that are more readily crossable with modern, elite varieties. Pre-breeding broadens the elite genepool by re-capturing lost beneficial genetic diversity. Pre-breeding provides a unique opportunity, through the introgression of desirable genes from wild germplasm into genetic backgrounds readily used by the breeders with minimum linkage drag, to overcome this.
