Why is important to use a surfactant for the coprecipitation synthesis?

I need to synthetized LaF3, I will use NH4F and La(NO3)3, some references use citric acid, i guess as surfactant, but I don´t undestand why is important to use that, there is any bibliography where explain this point in the coprecipitation synthesis?
