I have simulated an antenna in CST with frequency range set to 1-3 GHz and the results were good, gain of around 1.2 dBi at 1.575 GHz. When I increased the frequency range in the model to 1-6 GHz, the gain dropped to around -5 dBi. I have followed all the recommendations given in the link below and the gain is still low. Any ideas on what the problem is?

CST is better than that. There must be something different about the model, or the mesh, or something else. Look at the energy remaining in the problem, and where the power is going, and see if it makes sense, and compare it for the two sets of results. There are lots of diagnostic tools on the tree on the 1D results. Look at the electric fields, and the power flow in 2D, and power loss density. To do this you will need to set monitors at 1.575 GHz.
depends, which material you are using.... normally it happens due to ohmic losses
Normally the antenna gain is getting better at higher frequencies and vice-versa. May I know which type of antenna you were designed?

-I suggest checking the matching between the source and antenna.
-Modify the substrate thickness where the antenna gain increase with the increase in the substrate thickness.
-Minimise the relative permittivity of the substrate, and
-Finally, you can enhance the gain by utilising the basic EBG or FSS structure.
