The fellowships/scholarships are like peanuts when compared to the hard work of a research scholar. They become loyal to their respective supervisors for at least 5-8 years. People in these days are not interested in doing research and PhD as the value of their education and hardship is neither paid enough nor given respect or appreciation.
I have talked to many PhD scholars in different institutes where students have some or other problems, many of them are genuine and many are just common ones. But the issue is about the amount of pain you take for pursuing the research problem (which actually belongs to your carrier) is never appreciated rather you get demoralized quite often for your little mistakes. Mental stability is must for a researcher to focus on planning and its smooth execution. I am not getting personal but its common with vast majority of the PhD scholars. There are exceptions where guides take care of all your needs related to finance, administration, paper-work etc. But its only exceptions which are hard to find.
Santosh, I believe the PhD scholarly attainment is often criticized in the United States as well because, society hasn't really implement a standard to distinguish and recognize those with doctoral attainment. The critical issue is how can we demonstrate that we have a higher level of knowledge and competence. Michele
Michele, I do understand that its a worldwide issue where researchers are not valued up to their caliber and been exploited most of the time in many regards. Considering the situation, we need to learn the situations where we are not given due respect and react accordingly to make them realize that research is a social cause and we need to understand it.
This is where we lack. Although we do have regulatory bodies which controls the universities norms but following the rules is a main concern. They are least bothered for the academic carriers of the students. They never think that this thing can happen to their lids as well. They too will suffer with the same problem, if the system will not improve.
Santosh, I agree with you and this is what we are suffering from it as well. Universities must update their programs according to the evolution of modern technologies in education
PhD is the highest degree that any country can produce and should be given respect. Even the faculties / scientists get the due respect in the society because they are the one who has the moral, social and academic responsibilities. They need to focus on the real issues of the society and should try to find the possible solutions for each and every problems, let it be lack of agricultural produce, lack of health awareness, lack of medical facilities, lack of knowledge etc. They are there for inculcating knowledge in the society and not for playing politics, discouraging students and spoiling their carrier.
The more limitations and harassment issues for doing a PhD thesis, the more deviations from research occur.
This is the reason why our community lack in knowledge. Even after spending hard times (not less than 5-7 years in case bench-work is required), we do lack the ignition. Given proper guidance and timely support (both academic and financial), the research scholars have the potentials to do better.
Dear Santosh, PhD fellowships need to be nearly doubled immediately in India, some tight regulations need to be adapted by UGC especially in non-professional Univ., Institutes (since professional Univ are good for doing PhD peacefully, I believe so), Functional placement centres need to be activated at regional and national level -- highly functional --- just register in that and be assured for a satisfactory job, also while doing PhD - this scholar must also develop some other skills apart from PhD - may be of any good sort, and if nothing else then writing papers, small booklet, popular articles and need to work in a team work with friends/colleagues.
