Every reference I've come across uses pulses for the quantum signal -where the continuous wave is amplitude modulated into pulses. What would prevent us from directly using continuous wave instead ?
I am not sure if this is too obvious to be the right answer, but a CW wave does not contain any information. It never changes. It is modulating it that allows information to be transmitted. It doesn't have to be amplitude modulated, it can be frequency modulated or phase modulated or a combination.
