First of all we don't call  any DC to DC converter a Bidirectional Dc DC converter. There is a kind of dc dc converter which is called split-pi or boost buck converter which is bidirectional. This converter has two pi filters structure in both sides that is separated (the word split) by a MOSFET switch. This converter is  suitable for dc power flow in both directions between two dc buses. Application area includes energy storage in battery bank for hybrid electric vehicle, renewable energy systems, UPS etc.

Bidirectional dc dc converters are capable of operating in both boost and buck mode in alternative directions. There are a lot of  isolated or non-isolated  type of bidirectional dc dc converters are available with diverse topology. 

bi-directional DC-DC converters can transfer power in both directions. normally used for connecting battery to DC bus.
