Plastoglobuli increase during senescence of leaves, and as abiotic stress in general accelerate leaf senescence, these' globuli' increase in chloroplasts.
This paper provides some interesting discussion on the role of plastoglobules: Bréhélin C, Kessler F, Van Wijk KJ (2007) Plastoglobules: versatile lipoprotein particles in plastids. Trends in Plant Science 12: 260–266
Plastoglobules contain also b-carotene that protect against oxidative stress. Senescence is frequently associated with increasing level of ROS and these may be a reason why they increased in senescent leaves. See American Journal of Botany 94(1): 12–24. 2007.
