Possibly, the main distinction one might make in differentiating coaching from mentoring is that the former does not necessarily rely on the specific experience and knowledge of the coach being greater than that of the client, and may emphasize cross-disciplinary skills. Also, mentoring usually refers to one-on-one relationships, whereas coaching can target both individuals and teams.

I have acted as both a coach and mentor to my students, hence I believe that A mentor can also take on a coaching role by using coaching techniques to help the mentee work through specific challenges or develop particular skills. In this case, the mentor combines their wisdom and guidance with coaching approaches to support the mentee's growth. And also what happens is a mentor may also employ coaching techniques to help the mentee clarify their goals, explore possibilities, and create action plans. This coaching aspect within mentoring helps the mentee gain clarity and take ownership of their development. So while I agree that coaching and mentoring have their distinct characteristics, they can overlap and be used in combination depending on the context and the needs of the individuals involved. If we are talking about similarities then yes, Both coaching and mentoring contribute to personal and professional development by providing support, guidance, and opportunities for growth.

As a coach and mentor, I believe both terms are often used as synonyms out of ignorance.

The same goes for terms like mission and purpose, vision and purpose, principles and values, words that are very different but that people confuse with each other.

As for the terms coach and mentor, I imagine that they can also be about association since in both cases it is about an expert who accompanies someone who is developing or who wants to develop, people assume that they are about similar activities.

It is entirely possible to distinguish between a business mentor and a life mentor, so yes, of course, it should be used.

The first problem is there are different definitions of the terms "Coaching" and "Mentoring". We define them as follows:

Coaching is about helping someone develop by finding their own solutions (specifically the coach not giving opinions).

Mentoring is using your experience to enable the performance / development of another.

I also agree with Dharti Narwani that a mentor is much more effective if they have good coaching skills - which many do not, unfortunately!
