The herd immunity will have an effect between 60-70 % infections of a population.
Then the previously infected will have antibodies and not be infective anymore. Then the infection will be stoppend in a natural way. That is the scientific knowlege of epidemiologists, virologists, immunologists and biologists for the case that SARS-CoV-2 behaves like all the other viruses (e.g. Influenza or Corona-Virus)...

1- Why 80%? Why not 100%, or such as China, few percentage?
2- if the infected people cured and others in the lock down, do the viruse still survive in the city and/or is there still posibilty of second or third peak?
Herd immunity is the only natural method which can the natural cycle of transmission . This is only applicable if the virus does not mutate and antibodies give life long immunity

Having said that, getting infected is not the right way of developing herd immunity as we are saying that 70-80% of the population will be infected from the virus. Herd immunity with the help of vaccination is the correct way to move forward , hence the wait for a break through...
It's for the herd immunity to develop. It is perceived that when 80%of the population gets the infection than the remaining will not get the infection because of herd immunity. It's like there will be a circle of infected patients with immunity and in the center uninfected patient will be there getting protection from the immune ones.
It is necessary to make more studies about the distribution of COVID-19 in the general population in several countries along the world, in order to confirm this hypothesis
If for example, 80% of the population are to be infected and develop immunity, or get vaccinated to slow down transmission in any way, then enough people would be immune to a disease that it can not make in-roads in the community.

yes, living a hidden life against any disease is not a permanent solution and is also not possible all the time. eradication is not an easy procedure when the disease occurrence is scattered every where and is not having potent vaccine. people has to get infected or exposed herd immunity population and become immune for the disease
When 80%of the population gets the infection than the remaining will not get the infection because of herd immunity. There will be ring of immunized people around the susceptible ones due to which the susceptible get protected from the virus.
In absence of any drug or vaccine the COVID-19 will not disappear until 80% people are infected for development of herd immunity.
