Hi all,
I would like to know the currently needed advancements in this science and is there any chance of developments in this field? How big is the market? and is it worth investing in making a fully automated Tribo Machines? So that the researcher can load multiple testing specimens to the machine, and then the machine will take the specimens, install them in its holders and perform the study with showing all the needed data by pressing just a single button on the screen.
Please show me your contribution, and Thanks in advance :).
P/S: I have created a prototype design for automated POD machine, that reduced a total net time to conduct a tribological experiment roughly by 60%.

Tribology Measurements are highly used in automotive industry, since there are a lot of moving parts and reduction of friction and wear will reduce fuel consumption and enhance lifetime. But automotive industry prefer tribo test under most realistic conditions e.g. measuring under oil, or at high loads or at high temperatures (as in a motor).
Other applications are in tool industry (drills, cutting tools etc.) were wear reduction is mostly the aim.
In general in mechanical engineering there is a high need in tribological optimization .

The problem with the tribo machine testers is simulating realistic conditions, any difference may lead to completely wrong conclusions. The best option is still something like a "taylored" equipment for each aplication.
If you gonna project it for general purposes, need to take with to many variables.... Atmosphere, temperature, normal load, third body presence, tangencial forces, velocity....among others.
The medical-device industry uses POD in tribology studies. In fact, AMTI has stopped producing their multi-station POD tester, the OrthoPOD. As a result, I think there is a lack of instruments that can be used for that type of experiments.
Hello. I want to advise you to have in mind the cost of the equipment. How much would the market pay for it? There are a lot of these equipments in the market but sometimes there are just too expensive.
