I believe that teachers must FIRST be able to honest and forthright in their skills and ability to grasp lessons to be taught. I agreewith Mark about the critical thinkingmpiece; however, critical think is equally difficult to measure as it is to teach. I like Rober Marzanos teaching evaluation model. Ther are four domains within the model itself and domain 4 captures the essence of collegiality and professionalism. Domain Four builds on the generated ideas and assumptions about the effectivess or ineffectivess of the delivered lessons. Domain four includes the collegiality piece suggesting instructors understand and embrace strengths and weaknesses attempting to level out the two. True professionals self reflect honestly develop and plan executions for improvement (Marzano, 2011). The model is based on the individual and observer combining efforts for improvement with an end goal of student success. Marzano states that education reform begins in the classroom as the combined efforts of both students and teachers in the classroom with the overarching goal being student achievement as the “superiordinate goal, supported by uniform yet flexible behaviors in the classroom” (Marzano, 2012, p. 79). Marzano (2012) affirms that ensuring great effective and meaningful teaching is based on evaluations of both administrators and teachers based on how improvements are made directly in relation to student achievement. A teacher also has to understand their own critical thinking skills. This model is further based on the teacher’s acknowledgement of strengths and weaknesses, having teachers choose strategies or skills in which to concentrate and improve upon (Marzano, 2012). All of these speak directly about critical thinking and honest teaching.
I had to perform a teacher evaluation for class and this model was used as the basis for the classroom observational experience, and provided a structure in which to evaluate and learn the process during the process. Understanding the basis and premise behind Marzano’s model allowed for my better understanding of the evaluation process, and overall goals associated with the implications of such a model. High quality teaching is everyones goal I would think. Teaching is about the content and the delivery of the content.
Interesting question and interesting answers, but I think you need the teachers set the benchmark for 'high' quality before even starting to think about these abilities.
