I am looking into the appropriate ASTM standard for the tension test with thin reinforced plastics (fibre-reinforced polymer composites and less than 1 mm thickness). ASTM D882 and D3039 are sorted, but I am not sure which is the right choice. If you were me, which ASTM standard is right for this question? Thank you in advance.

Dear Kyungli kong, since the thickness of the composite is lesser than 1 mm, it will be right to use ADTM D882, with 25mm width and gauge length of 50 mm. The test speed can be 100 mm/min, but that can be chosen depending on the properties of the composite.

ASTM D882 is a common method of examining the mechanical properties of thin plastic films of less than 1 mm (0.040 in). In this test, a sample of film is mounted between two grips that are 250 mm (10 in) apart at the beginning of the test (gage length) distance which are then pulled by applying a tensile load.

See, please, ASTM D638: p. 1.2 This test method is applicable for testing materials of any thickness up to 14 mm (0.55 in.). However, for testing specimens in the form of thin sheeting, including film less than 1.0 mm (0.04 in.) in thickness, ASTM standard D882 is the preferred test method.
Thank you all for your answers! However, I would answer that ASTM D3039 is applicable for tensile testing for high-modulus fibre-reinforced composites with a thickness of less than 1 mm.
In ASTM D638-22, it is stated that "this test method is applicable for tensile testing materials of any thickness up to 14 mm. However, when testing specimens in the form of thin sheeting, including film less than 1.0 mm in thickness, the preferred test method is ASTM standard D882. For the tensile properties of resin-matrix composites reinforced with oriented continuous or discontinuous high modulus (> 20 GPa) fibres, tests shall be conducted in accordance with Test Method D3039/D3039M."
When considering ASTM D882, crosshead speeds and initial grip separation depend on the percent elongation at break ((1)less than 20, (2)20 to 100, and (3)greater than 100), which corresponds to the high modulus of the polymer material, film type, or sheeting as far as I checked. As the high-modulus fibre-reinforced composite laminates have a high modulus of over 20 GPa, the test method can be considered as D3039/D3039M.
If any concerns about this, please add your opinions.
Dear Kyungil Kong, really, the standard D3039/D3039M is preferable for your case because this test method sharply defines the subject of study "in-plane tensile properties of polymer matrix composite materials reinforced by high-modulus fibers".
