prebiotic principally means promotion of Bifidobacteria, and most of the substances found (soluble fibers) do not promote the growth of Lactobacilli that mostly cannot use the more complex carbohydrates that Bifobacteria can! Often you find results showing growth of Lactobacilli from such, but when then the growth from the sugar part is substracted there is no extra growth!
Now , I work Gum Arabic as prebiotic in yogurt product by probiotic starter (Lb. acidophilus and B. bifidum ) and I found It promote the growth of Lb. acidophilus which arabionase Rhemanose fermentation while B. bifidum cant
Agree that L.acidophilus a.o. Lactobacilli can grow from arabinose and rhamnose, but normally not seen as prebiotic, anyway that is just a definition issue:-)
We have seen that a bacillus species gets its growth enhanced marginally when grown in media containing very low doses of essential oils from some Indian spices.
I worked for 3 years with fiber from maize and wheat on the entirety of the microbiota . By daily addition of 10/15/20/25 / and 35 grams of fiber appararaissent the best results from 20 grams and stabilization from 5 grams. the action is focused on the pancreas because of the very marked improvement of Diabetes figures , the action focuses on the brain, because an effect on satiety is very clear. A colleague of research gate told me that he had to consider the environement conditions. In fact the changes, nutritional changes , sports activities have not yet start the effect on satiety appears and waist circumference decreases.
Hypothesis; If the fibers have an effect on the microbiota it must have an effect on Lactobacillus !
I can only suggest you that just look at the source, where the tested Lactobacillus strain was originated from? This will help you in getting the exact knowledge about the metabolic capabilities of that strain.......
