I would say to choose a data set which might be a close resembles with the real time network traffic.

However most of the data sets are synthetically generated through script files

I would add the NSL-KDD dataset is a very popular optimization of the original KDD-Cup '99 dataset. Find it here: http://nsl.cs.unb.ca/NSL-KDD/ Venkat Ramesh's link is also very good.
