I am working on active and reactive power control with distributed generators. Do I need to model an inverter or a back to back converter, which is more viable?
With an inverter you will control both the active and reactive powers which implies the regulation of AC-side voltage and frequency. Howerer, with a back to back converter you will be able to control the active and reactive powers, and also the DC link voltage.
I am afraid that answering your question is not that easy !. there are several issues to put into consideration before your decision:
what is the application?
what is the amount of the reactive power?
what type of converter is utilised (current/voltage source)?
is the converter you used is front-end or no?
these are only some of the issues, and the reason of sending this to you is to provoke the sense of searching in these issues before deciding what to do.
