Imagine that I want to study the effects of certain stresses on plant. Besides of the several parameters that I measure to study such effects, I want to evaluate, finally, the fitness of plant under those stresses.

Fitness of plants is commonly measured as number, size, germinability of seeds, time of bloom, number of flowers, photosynhtesis efficiency, or plant biomass. Of course, plant fitness results from a number of traits genetically controlled and influenced by the environment.

But, if I would like to measure the expression of one or a few genes as markers of plant fitness, which genes shoud I choose? I'm wondering whether some genes are more related than others to plant fitness. I would imagine as appropriate some genes involved in the metabolisms of photosynthesis or respiration. To monitor the expression of these genes would be useful in experiment ended before seed production, in order to measure and predict plant fitness.
