Hi everyone, we use the UV epoxy to fix the optical device. When open the UV lamp to cure the UV epoxy, we found that the power turn down quickly. We wanna to analysis which factor is related with the shrinkage UV epoxy? Is the filler(silica) is a critical factor for the shrinkage of UV epoxy.
Hellow, Jian Wu! You know that the meadlle distance among molecules in liquid state is usually greater than one in solid state.Happy for life on the Earth is exclusion for water ais. That is why under polymerization which is the base of fixing by epoxy the shreankage takes place.

The shrinkage of epoxy upon UV curing is due to the molecular structure changed, from van der Waals distance before solidification, to covalent distance after curing, as the crosslinking reaction happened. Besides that, the curing parameter, such as effective wavelength, UV intensity, distance from light source and etc.. also affect the degree of shrinkage during the curing process. Relationship between degree of conversion and degree of shrinkage need to be determined. In my opinion, the best is to investigate both the degree of cure and shrinkage percentage in order to achieve adequate bonding strength while minimized the shrinkage percentage.
With the addition of filler, the shrinkage can be reduced, where the degree of shrinkage reduction is related to the filler content, geometry and particle size.
