I am working on a project related to the sewage sludge catalysis and bio diesel production, using that catalyst.
Two catalyst are to be made,
1- Acid treated sludge catalyst
2- Base treated sludge catalyst
We have to determine, which will produce a better reaction and quality of bio fuel?
I don't know about catalysis for sludge treatment, but for biodiesel, there is a lot of research about it. Industrially they use homogeneous catalysis using NaOH or KOH and there is a necessity of treatment of the product and neutralization. The yield in biodiesel is high. Some use acid catalysts as zeolites HY, HX, HZSM-5 or HMOR, heterogeneous but in lab level. In this case the yield is lower, but there are good possibilities. Using basic heterogeneous catalysts is an alternative, but the catalysts are expensive and the research is in progress. So, the homogeneous base catalysis is well known, of low cost and used industrially. Hope this helps.
Strong alkali catalysts such as NaOH, KOH, CH3ONa and CH3OK (potassium methoxide) are used for biodiesel production.
It is more efficient to use base catalyst. You have to prepare the methoxide before reaction.
