I have improved a previous state of the art method. Now I want to write a journal paper.My question is that where I should put the similarities and difference to the said paper. And how many contributions should be there to publish it in a reputed journal with impact factor >2. Should I give said paper limitations and in which section. Thanks.

I seems that the similarities and differences should be put in the introduction where you explain the originality of your paper that improves the state of the art method. If you mean "references" by the word "contribution" than there should be around 20.
Thanks@Avishag Gordon, regarding contribution I mean how many improvements in the baseline method are sufficient for publishing it in a high impact journal.

I am not sure that the number of improvements matter. The main point is that the improvement will convert the state of the art method into a shorter and more elegant, and a better understood one.
