The best place to download records of paleoclimate data is from the following website - http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/paleo/datalist.html - unfortunately it is presently closed because of the American government shutdown but once they come back to work I think you'll find this to be very helpful. it is quite detailed and all-encompassing

This is especially important right now as most NASA/NOAA data is not accessible due to the US govt shutdown.

2. The American Association of State Climatologists (http://www.stateclimate.org/) has links to a State Climatologist in nearly every state in the US. Many of these state climate offices have data and resources available online.

3. Archived and real-time snow data for mountainous areas of the Western United States can be found through the US Natural Resource Conservation Service SNOTEL Network: http://www.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/snow/

4. Mesowest (http://mesowest.utah.edu/) provides access to real-time and archived automated weather data around the United States, searchable by map location.

For climate station data the Berkeley earth surface temperature project provides quality controlled climate data for the entire globe with a 1 by 1 degree gridded product as well. This is all readily downloadable but you will have to know how to access netcdf files.

Two web-based alternatives are the climate reanalyzer and the knmi climate explorer which are both fantastic spots for all kinds of climate data and analysis.

Perticularly I am interested in weakly data on rainfall in Sri Lanka. Though the data is availabe with the Department of Meteorology, it is need to pay a high price for.

Dear Samarakoon, TRMM data is reasonably accurate and will be a good data for precipitation. we have used it in desert (kuwait) where it performed well. You can see out paper on RG where we did an assessment between measured precipitation and TRMM and also used weighted bilinear extrapolation.

sorry it is a late reply, but you maybe want to have a look also at the "Climate Explorer" website http://climexp.knmi.nl , which collects most of observative and reanalysis data available at the moment (including TRMM). It is very user-friendly, as you have just to ask which kind of data you need, for which period/region and the site provides all the relevant data and the links.
